Planning a Church Movie Night? Here’s What You Need to Know First!

Thinking About Hosting a Church Movie Night This Summer? Read This First!

Summer can be a tricky season for churches.

People are away on vacation, regular programs slow down, and volunteers want a bit of a breather. At the same time, it’s one of the best times of year to connect with your community in a relaxed, low-pressure way.

That’s one reason we love church movie nights. They’re easy to pull together, work for almost any age group and give people a reason to invite a friend, neighbour or family member along.

Of course, somewhere in the planning process, somebody usually asks:

“Can we actually show this movie at church?”

Fair question. A lot of churches are surprised to learn that owning a DVD, downloading a movie or streaming it through a personal account doesn’t automatically give permission to show it publicly. It’s one of those things most people don’t think about until they’re halfway through planning an event.

The good news is that getting the proper permissions is usually much simpler than people expect. That’s exactly why we created our Free Church Screening Guide.

We wanted to put everything in one place and make it easy for churches to understand what they need, what to watch out for and how to create a great experience for guests.

Inside the guide you’ll find:

  •  Information about church movie licensing in Canada
  •  Ideas for creating a welcoming movie night experience
  • Conversation starters and discussion ideas
  • Tips for promoting your event

And yes, we’ve included the licensing information so you don’t have to spend your evening searching the internet trying to figure it all out.

Need a Movie Recommendation?

If you’re looking for something to show, here are a few films we think are worth adding to your list:

🎥 Unsung Hero

🎥 Ordinary Angels

🎥 The Forge

🎥 A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood

🎥 The Chosen

🎥 I Can Only Imagine 2

What we love most about movie nights isn’t actually the movie, it’s the conversations that happen afterward or the family that decides to come back the following Sunday.

So, if you’re thinking about hosting a movie night this summer, we’d love to help.
